Measuring deprivation in New Zealand regions - a presentation series by CPAG & Associate Professor Dan Exeter

Child Poverty Action Group has produced a series of regional profiles for Nelson-Marlborough, Canterbury and Otago using The New Zealand Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD).

The IMD is a set of tools for identifying and measuring deprivation at the neighbourhood-level in data zones that have been custom-designed to produce better small area information, without losing information due to confidentiality issues. The IMD comprises 28 indicators grouped into seven domains of deprivation: Employment, Income, Crime, Housing, Health, Education and Access to services, which may be used individually or in combination to explore the geography of deprivation and its association with a given health or social outcome.

In these presentations Associate Professor Dan Exeter, who led the development of IMD, will discuss its development, how it compares to NZDep, and demonstrate the different ways in which the IMD and its domains can be used to better understand the drivers of deprivation within these areas. Dan will also discuss the potential for the IMD to inform health and social policy.

The intent of this series of reports and presentations is to provide an overview of how a fine grained geographical measure of deprivation could be used to examine variations in a region. These regional profiles could be useful for further research, policy and resource allocation and can help inform local level policy making.
