CPAG Summit 2019 “Whakamana Tāngata” – Is this the welfare system that will work for our children?
On 3 May the Government released Whakamana Tāngata: Restoring Dignity to Social Security in New Zealand, the report from the Welfare Expert Advisory Group (WEAG).
There has been surprisingly little public discussion of the Report by politicians and in the media, and a remarkably small response by the Minister of Social Development, Hon. Carmel Sepuloni, with a ten-year timeline. It appears that the report may be sidelined, and that little will change.
CPAG will host an annual Summit examining the kind of welfare system New Zealand families need in the 21st century.
This year the Summit will be framed around the question, “Has the WEAG report, Whakamana Tāngata, responded to these challenges?”
The WEAG group made 42 over-arching recommendations, including changing the principles and purposes of the Social Security Act, as well as 120 detailed recommendations.
Are these the right recommendations?
If not, what are the right ones?
Will they do enough?
If enacted, would they result in transformational change?
Join CPAG and friends, and hear from the experts speaking at our Summit about how we can make Aotearoa a better place for children and families - and how this Government can be convinced to make the bold steps to achieve the ‘transformational’ impact it promised.
