CPAG welcomes the replacement of the Guardianship Act of 1968 with the Care of Children Bill. In particular, we support the new emphasis on the rights of children and we wholeheartedly agree that âthe welfare and best interests of the child must be the first and paramount consideration."

CPAG appreciates that a Families Commission will have the potential to bring the concerns of families to the attention of both the government and the general public. As poverty is currently a major concern for many families, we hope the Commission will have a particular focus on this problem.

CPAG welcomes the Government's commitment to end child poverty, and its Budget Policy Statement aiming to support social cohesion and increase economic sustainability. However, we believe that without sustained and increased investment to reduce some of the glaring disparities between those children with access to resources, and those without, child poverty is destined to continue.
