Children are still the main casualties

Article by Innes Asher, Diane Robertson and Susan St John, published in the New Zealand Herald. Last Christmas we wrote an article for the Herald on the poor state of Auckland's low-income children. Depressingly, nothing has changed. The hospitals are still treating utterly unacceptable numbers of children with third world diseases. The outlook for many children in terms of their future health is bleak. Foodbanks are still trying to meet the food needs of far too many young children. Housing prices and rents are constantly rising, crippling the budgets of too many low-income families.

Mission Impossible

July 2002 Metro article by Diane Robertson, Auckland City Missioner. So the budget has been announced and it’s election year. Our clients haven’t noticed. Rather apt I suppose, because I don’t think the politicians have noticed our clients either. Each year, like other CEOs in the voluntary sector, I look to the Budget to see if it will alleviate the plight of the poor in New Zealand. This year – like last year - the Finance Minister was remarkably silent on the subject.
