Social policy and the implications for children

Susan St John. A recent Listener cartoon had some rather corpulent members of a certain political party looking out doubtfully at a baby abandoned on their doorstep. One is musing “well he might be cute, I don't know...are his parents married?” The electoral fortunes of that political party make discrimination against children on the basis of their parents' marital status now unlikely. Nevertheless, there have been other just as discriminatory trends in recent social policy with serious implications for the health and wellbeing of already disadvantaged children.
