UNICEF report paints bleak picture of the health and well-being of New Zealand children

A major report commissioned by the international research unit of UNICEF has found New Zealand's children have borne the brunt of economic and social reforms. The report When the Invisible Hand Rocks the Cradle; New Zealand children in a time of change says the reforms, which started in the 1980s, were among the most sweeping in scope and scale in any industrialised democracy, but New Zealand governments have not systematically monitored the impact of reform on children.

Children and their parents are the largest group of the poor

What has long been known to those who work with families, researchers, and social commentators, is now accepted by the Ministry of Social Development. Children and their parents are the largest group of the poor. The exact numbers may remain in dispute, but the orders of magnitude are not. A high proportion of New Zealand’s children and their parents are below any reasonable poverty line.

Human Rights Complaint about the Child Tax Credit

The Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) has filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission citing the Child Tax Credit as a discriminatory and damaging piece of legislation affecting hundreds of thousands of New Zealand children.

We have the Agenda – now lets start the action

In June 2002 the Government launched its Agenda for Children – which aims to put children at the centre of policy making, and end child poverty. CPAG was one of the community groups that welcomed the Agenda, but was concerned about the lack of a plan of action.

Post Election Action Required

Child poverty is now a serious and alarming phenomenon in New Zealand. The government has identified that 3 out of every 10 children live in unacceptably low income and housing conditions and has pledged to eliminate such impoverishment. However, commitment to this end requires more than words. It will need action on many fronts, including a willingness to devote adequate resources if the high social costs that flow from the neglect of children’s needs over a long period are to be averted.

The Agenda for Children released today by the government is a welcome acknowledgement that child poverty is a serious issue and it is pleasing to see the commitment to its elimination.

Children are invisible yet again

The budget has completely ignored a major issue critical to our growth prospects. The astonishing thing is that the ignored subject is not something radical and outrageous. It concerns child poverty and the way children are treated in the income distribution in New Zealand.
